Adult Overnight Respite Program
The establishment of our adult respite program has been a longstanding aspiration, realized in 2009 with the official opening of our adult respite program at our new location, 823 Rotary Way. The necessity for respite care doesn’t cease at the age of 21; in fact, it becomes even more crucial as caregivers age. Witnessing our children graduate and noticing the lack of available supports for them as adults spurred our commitment to opening an adult respite program.
Inclusive, Barrier-Free Environment
Adults entering our program area are met with a barrier-free environment, staffed by compassionate and highly trained professionals. The adult wing, while similar in structure to our children’s wing, exudes a more mature theme. Each bedroom is private, with an ensuite bathroom shared with one other guest. Our staff members undergo rigorous training to ensure they possess the skills necessary to deliver personalized care to each adult participant. From assisting with daily activities to administering medication and implementing specialized care plans, our team is dedicated to meeting the unique needs of every adult under our care. We strive to create a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere where adults feel valued, respected, and supported throughout their stay.
Program Offerings
Our adult program is comprised of five beds, providing a mix of funded and fee-for-service supports. Specifically, we operate two funded beds for 356 days a year, typically granting up to 20 days of respite annually to our enrolled participants. Additionally, we offer three beds year-round on a fee-for-service basis.
Eligibility
Adults referred by DSO are eligible to access the funded beds, while graduates of our children’s respite program and individuals with a physical disability between the ages of 21-40 can access our fee-for-service beds. It’s important to note that our adult respite program does not provide nursing support for medically fragile adults.
Program Cost
While the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) primarily funds the operation of two beds, we cover the remaining operating costs by asking parents to contribute $28.75 per day. Our fee-for-service beds are priced at $275.00 per day, and families have the option to utilize passport funding or personal insurance to procure this service.
Check-in and Check-out Times
Check-ins typically occur between 15:00 and 16:30 to accommodate the high demand for respite. Discharges take place between 13:00 and 14:30, facilitating smooth transitions for both adults and their families.
