Respite Programs FAQChildren's & Adult Respite Programs

Who is eligible to use respite services?
  • Children’s Overnight Program: Open to individuals aged from birth to 21, residing in the East region of Ontario, and diagnosed with a primary physical disability.
  • Complex medical Needs/Multiple Special Needs Program: Available to children from birth to age 18 who require daily nursing support or have complex care needs necessitating enhanced supports.
  • Adult Overnight Respite: Designed for individuals aged 18 to 40 with a primary diagnosis of a physical disability residing in the East region.
What is involved in the intake process?

Our intake process is designed to ensure that our programs are the right fit for your child, youth, or young adult. Here’s an overview:

Initial Discussion: A member of our intake team will meet with you to discuss your needs and determine if our programs align with your requirements.

Home Tour: We’ll invite you to tour our respite home, giving you a firsthand look at our operations and allowing us to meet you and your child, youth, or young adult.

Questionnaires: You’ll be asked to complete comprehensive health and care questionnaires. These documents cover every aspect of your loved one’s daily life, helping us tailor our services to mimic their home routine as closely as possible.

Medical Documentation: We require a doctor’s note confirming your child, youth, or young adult is free of communicable diseases and has received necessary immunizations.

Day Visit: Once all paperwork is completed and a care plan is established, we’ll invite you for a day visit. During this visit, we’ll review the care plan, discuss any required medications, and observe how your loved one adapts to our respite environment.

Overnight Stay: If the day visit goes well, we’ll schedule the first overnight stay. After this, you’re free to book regular respite stays.

We understand that transitioning to respite care can be daunting. Whether you’re familiar with respite or it’s your first time, we accommodate your comfort level. We even offer the option for you to stay overnight initially to experience our care firsthand and ensure your confidence in our services.

Is there a waiting list for services?

We strive to provide immediate access to our respite services once the intake process is complete. While we do not maintain a formal waiting list for program enrollment, please note that specific dates requested may not always be available if our capacity is reached. In such instances, alternative dates will be offered to accommodate your needs. Rest assured, we work diligently to ensure timely access to our services for all individuals in need.

How do families book a respite stay?

Currently, respite stays can be booked by contacting one of our respite coordinators during our office hours, Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM. Simply provide your requested dates when speaking with our team. Additionally, we are actively developing an online booking system to streamline the process, allowing parents to book at any time of day. Stay tuned for updates on this convenient feature.

What does a respite stay cost?

While the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services primarily fund our services, families are responsible for a nominal fee to access respite services. Here are the current rates:

  • Children’s Program: $10 per day for each child.
  • Adult Program: $28.75 per day for each adult.
  • Additional Respite (Unfunded Beds): Available on a fee-for-service basis. Beds can be secured using passport funds at a rate of $275 per night.

These fees help support the ongoing provision of quality care and services for all individuals accessing our programs. If you have any questions about the fee structure or payment options, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Do you offer emergency services?

At The Ottawa Rotary Home, we understand that unexpected situations can arise in any family, such as the illness of a parent or a significant family event. In such circumstances, we are here to support you.

You can reach out to us by phone, day or night, and we will make every effort to accommodate your child, youth or young adult immediately, provided space is available. Your child’s admission and stay during emergencies do not count towards the usual number of nights used per year.

This flexibility ensures that you can plan your vacation time with peace of mind, knowing that we are available to assist you in unforeseen circumstances, space permitting. Your family’s well-being and peace of mind are our top priorities, and we are here to support you whenever you need us.

What are your care standards?

At the Ottawa Rotary Home, we uphold rigorous care standards to ensure the well-being and safety of all individuals in our programs. Our care standards encompass several key areas, including:

Person-Centered Approach: We prioritize individualized care plans tailored to each participant’s unique needs, preferences, and goals.

Qualified Staff: Our team consists of trained professionals who are experienced in providing care for individuals with physical disabilities and complex medical needs.

Medical Support: Our staff is equipped to provide medical support as needed, including administering medications, monitoring vital signs, and responding to medical emergencies.

Quality of Life: We strive to enhance the quality of life for participants by providing engaging activities, fostering social connections, and promoting independence and self-expression.

Continuous Improvement: We continuously evaluate and improve our care practices through feedback from participants, families, and staff, as well as ongoing training and education initiatives.

These care standards reflect our commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality care that promotes the well-being and happiness of all individuals in our programs. If you have any specific questions about our care standards or practices, please feel free to reach out to us for more information.
