Complex Medical Needs Program

Children (birth to 18) requiring nursing supports

Complex Medical Needs Program

Our Complex Medical Needs Program is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for children aged 0-18 who face significant medical challenges or have complex care requirements. These children are medically fragile or technologically dependent, requiring 24-hour nursing care and ongoing assessments to ensure their survival and well-being. We understand the complex needs of these children and are committed to providing the highest quality of care to support their health and development.

Enhanced Nursing Expertise

We are proud to have a compassionate and skilled team of registered practical nurses specializing in pediatric care. Led by a clinical coordinator and overseen by our Director of Operations & Health Management, a registered nurse, our nursing staff is committed to delivering the highest standards of care. We prioritize evidence-based nursing practices and ensure that our team members receive ongoing education and training to remain abreast of the latest medical advancements and best practices in pediatric healthcare.

Program Capacity

Our program operates with three dedicated beds, providing consistent support for children with ongoing medical needs. Two of these beds receive funding for 356 days a year, ensuring uninterrupted assistance for our families. Additionally, we maintain an emergency bed funded for 100 days annually to promptly address urgent situations.

Given the limited capacity compared to our regular relief program, we allocate time to families based on their level of need. On average, families meeting the criteria can access the complex need beds for 21 days per year.

Check-in and Check-out Times

Check-ins typically occur between the hours of 15:00 and 16:30 to accommodate the high demand for respite. As we are often at full capacity, admissions times are carefully scheduled to ensure that we can provide the best possible care for each child. Similarly, discharges take place between 13:00 and 14:30, allowing for a smooth transition for both the child and their family. Children can arrive with their parents or be transported directly from school via school bus. Many of our children are discharged straight to school, and the bus picks them up directly from our location.

Program Cost

Our Complex Medical Needs program is primarily funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, covering 90% of our operating budget. To help bridge the remaining gap and ensure the sustainability of our services, we ask families to contribute a nominal fee of $10.00 per day. This modest contribution enables us to continue providing high-quality care and support to children with complex needss and their families, ensuring that our programs remain accessible and inclusive for all.

Eligibility

Our program is open to children aged 0-18 who are medically fragile or technologically dependent, requiring 24-hour nursing care or assessments for their survival and overall well-being. To qualify, children must reside at home with their parents and be located within the Eastern region.
